A computer glitch has caused Dallas-based Atmos Energy Corp. to charge as many as 28,000 north Texas customers 10 times the actual amount of their current gas bill.
Atmos officials say they are nvestigating the cause of a payment issue that affected approximately 39,000 of its natural gas distribution customers in Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Colorado, Kansas and Mississippi.
The incident occurred when a vendor charged customers who pay their bill by credit or debit card through an automatic draft.
Atmos Energy will reverse any financial impact due to our error. As of 3 p.m. on Monday, charges had reversed for all credit card customers and all but 668 debit card customers. Customers should see the refund appear on their accounts within the next 24-to-72 hours, according to the company.
