He received his M.D. degree from University of Tennessee in 1957. After a four year period of service as a medical officer of the United States Army he spent four years at the Veterans Administration Hospital as a resident training in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery. He moved to Fort Worth in 1966 where he practiced until retirement in 1997. He is a member of numerous professional societies, United Methodist Church of Fort Worth and Colonial Country Club. His son John is retired from XTO energy and son Stephen is a personal injury attorney in Fort Worth
